Mare Brook Farm is family-owned and operated farm, located in Brunswick Maine. The farm has five acres of growing fields, three greenhouses, and 10+ acres of forest that are MOFGA certified organic. We focus our efforts on seedlings, specialty cut flowers, and evergreen products, utilizing low-till, regenerative farming practices. We actively work to improve overall soil healthy, and cultivating perennial plants to benefit our pollinators and ecosystem. We sell most of our products through our farm store, CSA offerings, and a variety of partnerships with local businesses.

Job Description

Our flower/vegetable crew position includes work within Mare Brook Farm’s entire field operation. You will participate in all daily activities on the farm including (but not limited to) weeding, trellising, planting, harvesting and packing, along with other farm projects. You will be expected to wash flower buckets and produce containers, make bouquets, assist with wreath season, assist with flower and produce inventory, field and facility clean-up, and etc. We sell flowers, herbs, vegetables and wreaths to wholesale customers (retail, floral designers and the Maine Flower Collective); bouquets for our Flower CSA program; bouquets, herbs, vegetables and wreaths for our retail farm shop; and specialty arrangements and flower buckets for events. Multiple days per week are spent harvesting thousands of stems for many hours at a time. We harvest in all weather conditions and this work is fast-paced and very physically demanding. The ideal candidates for our Flower/Vegetable crew have a full season of commercial farming experience or have worked in other manual labor jobs that demand a strong sensitivity to process pacing and production standards with many standing hours. We are looking for team members with a willingness to learn the quality standards of many flower/vegetable varieties, a strong attention to detail, good organizational skills, and comfort with priority shifts based on crop-specific or weather needs. After a training period, you will be expected: to navigate our harvest lists; participate in record keeping; move rapidly and accurately from one task to the next; and have a clear understanding of farm organization and workflow. Field Assistant Expectations: – Hardworking team player with a positive attitude. – Willingness to learn, take direction, and receive feedback. – Demonstrates strong attention to detail and observational skills who can keep pace with process needs. – Efficient, self-motivated worker with time management skills. – Ability to work solo or as a part of a team. – Respectful of all farm resources (for example, but not limited to, co-workers, farm kids/animals, customers, crops, products, tools, fields, farm shop, and environment) – Willingness to work outside in all conditions (e.g., rain, snow, wind, mud, bugs, heat, humidity) – Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform repetitive, physical tasks (e.g., kneeling, bending down, squatting, standing, etc.) – Ability to perform manual labor for hours at a time – Dependable transportation to/from work. – Access to a reliable cell phone: Because this is a field-based position, reliable access to a cell phone is required for safety, coordination, and emergency communication while working across the farm. Position Description and Responsibilities We primarily seek to hire employees who are able to commit to a full-time work (40-hour/week) schedule for the duration of the farm season. We also offer year-round employment to a smaller group of employees who can commit to a full second year of full-time work on the farm. Additionally, we often hire several part-time employees for the summer. Employees participate in all aspects of work on the farm, from planting to weeding to harvesting, washing, packing, bouquet making, and occasional retail shop assistance. We offer an opportunity to work outside and learn many aspects of organic flower, herb, and vegetable production. We think farm work is very rewarding, but it can also be very tiring and challenging. We work in all weather conditions throughout a long growing season. Therefore, we look to hire individuals who are self-motivated, appreciate hard work, and have a sense of humor.
