An online version of this class is also being offered; more information here. Come join us to learn how to reproduce your favorite apple tree varieties! Bench grafting is a very cost-effective way to create (graft) new small trees for planting. This class will be taught by Laura Sieger\, MOFGA’s Orchard Coordinator\, and Jacob Mentlik of After the Fall Farm and Fedco. They will start by discussing why and when to bench graft fruit trees and will demonstrate several different types of graft (whip and tongue\, bark\, etc). Then everyone can begin grafting their own trees. There will be lots of time for practice and questions. This class has sold out. If you would like to join the waitlist please email events@mofga.org  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Each participant will be provided with 5 pieces of rootstock and scionwood\, a grafting knife\, and parafilm tape for securing your grafts – all to take home and use again. At the class we will alsoo provide a grafting compound for participants’ use. Please bring clippers if you are able. There will also be more rootstock & scionwood to practice on – these trees will be going home with the young people from the South Portland Trees group to be planted out in the community! This is a group of “dedicated students from South Portland who have been working for several years to help keep the air clean and address food insecurity by helping provide and plant fruit-bearing trees to residents of South Portland at no cost.” This class is limited to 20 participants. It will be held at the South Portland Recreation Center. $65 general admission; $55 for MOFGA and South Portland Land Trust members.Participants in MOFGA’s Journeyperson program and BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous People of Color) community members can attend free of charge. Questions?
