Learn to topwork (graft) new disease-resistant, cider, dessert or heritage varieties onto your existing trees! Topworking\u00a0is the type of grafting that is done when you have an established tree and you\u2019d like it to produce a different variety of fruit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is an incredible way to expand the type of fruit you grow and improve the quality of your orchard or backyard fruit trees over time. Learn about how to topwork scions (sticks of 1-year old wood of your new variety) onto your existing trees. We\u2019ll talk about the tools and supplies you\u2019ll need and delve into the most effective ways to top work fruit trees.<\/p>\n

This workshop will be taught by Laura Sieger, orchardist at Fedco Seeds,\u00a0and held\u00a0at Pleasant Pond Orchard in Richmond, Maine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is an outdoor workshop, and participants are encouraged to wear close-toed shoes, long pants, and sleeves. There are indoor restrooms available. Feel free to contact us with any questions about accessibility.\u00a0In the event of severe weather, the workshop will be held on Sunday, May 17.<\/p>\n

Join us for our first Gather & Grow tour of the season: taking place at a residential garden featuring three different composting practices\u00a0in Sidney, Maine!\u00a0In this year’s Gather & Grow series, garden tour hosts will share information about their gardening practices in general, and through the lens of climate change adaptation.<\/p>\n

About the gardens:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tom Vigue and Eileen Fingerman have been growing on their plot of land — dubbed “Kiwi Hill Farm,” after the first fruit they planted there —\u00a0since the early 1990’s. Their vegetable gardens span about 1\/4 acre and consist of 21 different beds, which are managed on a 7-year crop rotation plan and with low-till practices. They have also cultivated many perennial plants, including a home\u00a0orchard, which features\u00a0various fruit trees, vines, and shrubs. Composting has been key\u00a0to their approach to sustainable and successful\u00a0gardening. Tom manages three different composting systems: vermicompost bins, larger compost piles, and leaf mold piles. Gain some garden inspiration on this tour,\u00a0while learning a bit\u00a0about composting and other climate-smart gardening practices.<\/p>\n

Farm & Homestead Day at MOFGA is a free day of hands-on learning and fun. From its beginnings in 2012 it has been presented by volunteers who delight in sharing their expertise in skills for rural and sustainable living. There are activities for all ages.<\/p>\n

Learning to mow with a scythe has been a draw from the beginning, as has been hands-on tool care. Woodworking techniques for utility and beauty are shared. The plant swap is always popular as are fiber arts including spinning, dyeing, and weaving with a variety of looms.<\/p>\n

Farm & Homestead Day begins with traditional tea and crumpets.\u00a0 A variety of musical offerings has everyone dancing and singing to round out the day.<\/p>\n
