From its beginnings in 2012 it has been presented by volunteers who delight in sharing their expertise in skills for rural and sustainable living. There are activities for all ages.

Learning to mow with a scythe has been a draw from the beginning, as has been hands-on tool care. Woodworking techniques for utility and beauty are shared. The plant swap is always popular as are fiber arts including spinning, dyeing, and weaving with a variety of looms.

Farm & Homestead Day begins with traditional tea and crumpets. A variety of musical offerings has everyone dancing and singing to round out the day.

The volunteer organizers, The Rabble, meet throughout the winter and spring to plan this event. To join, email farmandhomesteadday@mofga. Regular Highlights include:

LEARN MORE HERE

Join us for a Gather & Grow tour at a 6-acre multigenerational homestead in Nobleboro, Maine! In this year’s Gather & Grow series, garden tour hosts will share information about their gardening practices in general, and through the lens of climate change adaptation.

About the homestead:

Join Sam and Kim for a tour of their thoughtfully restored 6-acre homestead, centered on growing nutrient-dense food and building a resilient, regenerative lifestyle. After moving full-time to midcoast Maine in the spring of 2021, they took on a long-abandoned property and, over the past five years, have brought it back to life.

Today, the homestead supports a diverse range of systems. Sheep are raised for meat, dairy, and fiber, with a focus on rotational grazing to rebuild soil health and revitalize pastures. Pigs and chickens are pasture-raised, contributing to both the farm’s productivity and ecological balance. Visitors will see no-till market gardens and a kitchen garden that provide an abundance of vegetables throughout the growing season. This harvest is preserved and stored in a traditional root cellar, supporting year-round nourishment. The homestead also includes fruit trees, beekeeping, and established herb gardens, all contributing to a holistic, nutrient-dense food system. Rounding out the farm’s infrastructure is a recently installed grid-tied solar array, providing renewable electricity and supporting the homestead’s long-term sustainability. This tour offers a grounded look at the process of restoring land, building soil, and creating a productive, multi-generational homestead from the ground up.

There will be a boot wash on-site, for livestock biosecurity purposes.

Questions? Email events@mofga.org.
