Caleb will start by sharing strategies used to minimize the presence of pests from the outset using cultural practices such as promoting the presence of “beneficials”. But sometimes pests show up anyway, despite our best efforts or during particularly challenging growing seasons. Email events@mofga.org<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n Join us for our first Gather & Grow tour of the season: taking place at a residential garden featuring three different composting practices\u00a0in Sidney, Maine!\u00a0In this year’s Gather & Grow series, garden tour hosts will share information about their gardening practices in general, and through the lens of climate change adaptation.<\/p>\n About the gardens:<\/strong><\/p>\n Tom Vigue and Eileen Fingerman have been growing on their plot of land — dubbed “Kiwi Hill Farm,” after the first fruit they planted there —\u00a0since the early 1990’s. Their vegetable gardens span about 1\/4 acre and consist of 21 different beds, which are managed on a 7-year crop rotation plan and with low-till practices. They have also cultivated many perennial plants, including a home\u00a0orchard, which features\u00a0various fruit trees, vines, and shrubs. Composting has been key\u00a0to their approach to sustainable and successful\u00a0gardening. Tom manages three different composting systems: vermicompost bins, larger compost piles, and leaf mold piles.
